What is an AC Charger?

AC (alternating current) charging is when power is taken directly from the grid, and is converted to DC (direct current) power to charge the car’s battery. All electric vehicles have a built in ‘converter’ which enable this conversion. AC chargers are not just used for residential homes, commercial and industrial facilities are usually served by a three-phase power supply which accommodate higher loads (22 kW) than in your home (7.2 kW) and this enables 3x faster charging!

What is a DC Charger?

DC (direct current) charging, often referred to as fast or rapid charging, is when DC power is applied directly to the car’s battery, and is far quicker than AC (alternating current) charging as it does not require conversion to AC power. DC chargers, found at locations such as motorway service centres, can deliver an 80% charge in the time it takes for a cup of coffee and comfort stop. DC chargers operate at much higher loads (up to 350 kW) which is also what makes them so much quicker than AC chargers.
